About Yungay

Yungay is a city located in the Ancash Region, in the central part of the Callejón de Huaylas, approximately 2458 m.a.s.l., near the Santa River. The city was founded by Spanish Conquerors the 4th og August of 1533. The original city suffered great damage due to earthquakes and avalanches. The Llanganuco Lakes are part of the Huascaran National Park. The lakes are named Orconcocha (male lake) and Chinancocha (female lake). Both are separated by 0.6 miles, and Orconcocha is 10 m.a.s.l. Higher than Chinancocha, which puts it at 3860 m.a.s.l. Subterranean lakes link both lakes together, and people believe they are meant to represent a mating ritual. The lakes have a beautiful turquoise color, and you can find a great deal of biodiversity around them.
